Marie Antoinette Dress Project - Part 7 - The End

After attaching the sleeves, lining and hemming the MA dress was completed. All that remained was to deliver it to the birthday girl...

As promised, a Marie Antionette dress for my niece's birthday gift

... success!

[Note if you to have to make a late 1700s inspired dress, I have gathered a ton of resources on a Pinterest board HERE ]

Hmmm. Well that was fun. Now what shall I make?

Actually, as luck would have it the Monthly Stitch Collective challenge for March is a 'pattern stash buster' - the catch is You, not me, get to decide what I make.
Pictured below are 3 patterns from my stash:

Let me put forth a case for each pattern:
  • Simplicity 9585 (circa 1981) - I thought the bodice would make an excellent base for an Edwardian blouse. Maybe it will work, maybe it won't.
  • Simplicity 4762 men's waistcoat - my hubby said if I made him one, he'd wear it. You can't argue with that logic and I think I do owe him after he helped me bring home all the lovely sewing machines I bought last year - without which I couldn't join the Monthly Stitch after all.
  • Simplicity 6667 - (circa 1975) I'm not really a dress person, but if an occasion arose that required a dress, think I'd wear this.
Ok, there are Your choices, please cast a vote for which pattern I should make in the comments. Thank You!

  2. Oooh, such different options!! I'm voting for the Simplicity dress pattern, just because I think you'll make the other two up soon enough anyway. ;-)

Also, the MA dress is adorable!

  3. Oh you're doing the monthly stitch challenge too! I would have to say Simplicity 6667 - I love the 1970s and this one would make a beautiful dress.

  5. Liking Simplicity 9585, I reckon I can see it as a blouse too, but I think Simplicity 4762 wins. Making stuff for hubby is really rewarding. I've made two things for mine and felt so good after doing it. So the men's waistcoat gets my vote.

  6. Wow. You just made a birthday girl very happy. :) Well done. And my vote is for 6667, too. Every girl needs a dress once in a while and this one is timeless and pretty. :)

    1. Yes, she was happy. maybe less so when she first has to wash and iron it - but that's the joy of being an aunty, I get to play and run away! good point on the dress, thanks for voting

    1. that's very true. hmmm, maybe if it wins I should look at making it up in two different types of fabric... Thanks for playing along

  8. I'm going to have to go with the vest for the hubby. Sometimes they're just too good about putting up with us and our monstrous hobby. Nice reward for him.

  9. I'm going to weigh in for hubby's vest. Original waistcoats can look really good, and he probably deserves it

  11. I'm not usually one for unselfish sewing - my boyfriend is owed a shirt from two Christmases ago - but I'm going to vote for the waistcoat. It looks like fun, and very dapper too! Plus, hubbies need the odd item to distract them from our growing stashes!

    1. You have a very compelling point - keeping hubbies distracted from the stash is the most important rule in Sewing Club ;p
The plus side is I've never sewn a waistcoat either, and I do like learning something new.

    1. Thanks Barbara, it is a cute dress. I was thinking becasue it has panels, I could make using two complimentary fabrics...

  13. First, your niece is so lucky! I don't get to mAke much fun stuff now that my boys are getting older. Girls are more fun to see for sometimes.

Now for he vote, hubbies need to be sewn for. It must be theh vest. But, if you've never him, you will find out that he will want more. They love having clothes that fit and customized.

    1. Thanks, it was a fun project to make for her :)
Now you bring it up, I am curious to the hubby's possible reaction. I hadn't even considered it, but if I start with one, will he want more? maybe even - super scary - proper clothes like business shirts and trousers. maybe a suit! oh dear, where might this harmless endeavor lead? we shall find out :)

    1. You did?! so cool, I hope you will share a photo when you complete them. I would only be making one, the adult sized, but I do think it would be adorable having the two side by side :)
