<br />
<b>Because if you're handy with a sewing machine - <i>why not?</i> You can make yourself an outfit inspired by something seen onscreen. </b>It's been happening for years - before TV and movies, Books and Plays inspired Fashion trends - check
out the Dreamstress blog post on the 1870s sensation that was the <a href="http://thedreamstress.com/2017/03/terminology-the-olivia-cap-olivia-bonnet/" target="_blank">Olivia Bonnet</a><br />
<br />
<b>Where to start? </b>Firstly, the thing to remember with period dramas is depending upon the show's budget, target audience and the taste of the costumer designer, just because you're watching a period drama doesn't mean the clothes are historically accurate. <i>*cough*</i> <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reign_(TV_series)" target="_blank">Reign</a>.<i>*cough*</i><br />
<br />
If you're creating an item for the 2017 September Historical Sew Fortnightly Seen Onscreen Challenge -- Don't know what that is? Details <a href="http://thedreamstress.com/the-historical-sew-monthly-2017/" target="_blank"><b>here --</b></a><b> Then historical accuracy matters, so it's time to do some research</b>. May I recommend starting with <a href="http://www.frockflicks.com/" target="_blank"><b>Frock Flicks</b></a> where quote: <i>"we rip into Hollywood’s attempt at historical costuming and talk about exactly why they’re not accurate to the eras."</i><br />
<br />
<b>If you're an <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outlander_(TV_series)" target="_blank"><i>Outlander</i></a> fan</b>, then you have to check out the <a href="http://blog.americanduchess.com/" target="_blank">American Duchess</a> website - not only did these talented designers team up with Simplicity to patterns inspired by the TV show, they are also sharing <a href="http://blog.americanduchess.com/search/label/Outlander%20Pattern%20Hacks" target="_blank">"Outlander Pattern Hacks"</a> <b>revealing how to make those same patterns more historically accurate</b>. Also you must check out the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWLNaVKBl4EskUQUXWRZkew" target="_blank">American Duchess</a> YouTube channel. <br />

<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
</div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">Creating a
historically inspired outfit has many challenges. Even deciding what
to make can cause a lot of headaches because sometimes the endless
possibilities can be overwhelming. Where to start? Using a Fashion
Plate as a starting point makes the decision of what to sew so much
easier because it gives you a focus.</span></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">But what aspects
should you consider when picking a Fashion Plate?</span></span><br />
<br />

<br />
<br />
<h2>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;">What follows are my tips for choosing the Fashion Plate to use as the design base for your outfit.</span></span></h2>
<h2>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"></span></span></h2>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">For me, I have
approximately 3 methods.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<h3 style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> Firstly, let’s go
guilt free - <b>The Fabric </b><b>de-</b><b>Stash </b><b>Colourway</b><b>
Method</b>. </span></h3>
<h4 style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
</span></h4>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Anyone who sews will
know the twin emotions of both joy and guilt that the mounting fabric
stash fosters. <b>So </b><b>S</b><b>tep </b><b>O</b><b>ne is: go to
your stash and</b> <u><b>pick </b></u><u><b>two</b></u><u><b>
</b></u><u><b>complimentary</b></u><u><b> fabrics</b></u>.
</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">For example, from my
stash I’ve a plain green and a floral pink stripe that work well
together. (pictured below)</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNDiW9Qc5PnjHq9CgXZW-b0MEZSzYfjTH-iJ_P2BAKMTRZac_5HF00UfQV7QMLAjNIT6rsud58BMUkrUHpXcqjuLeLicDq7urTyq7B1JOBneCBxlJb0dIxMbiekqmB5GLMbRRHXy3sLy6H/s1600/green-and-pink-fabric.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="894" data-original-width="630" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNDiW9Qc5PnjHq9CgXZW-b0MEZSzYfjTH-iJ_P2BAKMTRZac_5HF00UfQV7QMLAjNIT6rsud58BMUkrUHpXcqjuLeLicDq7urTyq7B1JOBneCBxlJb0dIxMbiekqmB5GLMbRRHXy3sLy6H/s400/green-and-pink-fabric.jpg" width="281" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b>Step 2: Start a
Pinterest Inspiration board</b>, name it it after your fabrics and
start collecting and pinning any fashion plates that have similar
colours.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
For example mine is: <a href="https://nz.pinterest.com/kuracarpenter/green-and-pink-outfit/" target="_blank">Green and Pink Outfit</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0bKz8DiMPXIIMjW0xq4tm0e_dH2k4pL_YO3viKSexcixapBLrx_Z6y5R3FD9xo9vefxD1xTBoHWeYLgFVOvAZwbz-uEiYDKCsuG2DxnrwyyDC3S-h5g_ZOVt4CW_8S4NFCPZ9MmEc68IW/s1600/Green+and+pink+pinboard.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="404" data-original-width="530" height="303" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0bKz8DiMPXIIMjW0xq4tm0e_dH2k4pL_YO3viKSexcixapBLrx_Z6y5R3FD9xo9vefxD1xTBoHWeYLgFVOvAZwbz-uEiYDKCsuG2DxnrwyyDC3S-h5g_ZOVt4CW_8S4NFCPZ9MmEc68IW/s400/Green+and+pink+pinboard.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b>Step 3: Now,
start adding sewing pattern references</b> within that colourway pin
board that are as close to the fashion Plate as you can find.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This may take some
time, but there’s no rush. Eventually one out of all Fashion Plates
will stand out to you as the perfect outfit, and hopefully you’ll
have already find the suitable sewing pattern and be all set to go.
</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Easy, huh? </span><br />
<br />
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Here’s the one
I’ve chosen:</div>
</div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6YFymtlNg0E01sF3V9pwbqUqjMrJUzk8JGCdyFYMXifAGOhTIfBvatt8l9ubAoMFsRp4m_sToLoZIlZUTf4H2S5w8DUfqG5DXvN6D873BvvIqA8QeYppfnXDRfnWuQl5Ez-xAowhKmUMS/s1600/pink+and+green.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="730" data-original-width="564" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj6YFymtlNg0E01sF3V9pwbqUqjMrJUzk8JGCdyFYMXifAGOhTIfBvatt8l9ubAoMFsRp4m_sToLoZIlZUTf4H2S5w8DUfqG5DXvN6D873BvvIqA8QeYppfnXDRfnWuQl5Ez-xAowhKmUMS/s400/pink+and+green.jpg" width="308" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Of course there’s
no need to be limited to matching your fabric stash colours to the
fashion plates colours. It just makes things easier.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<h3 style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
But if you want to
ignore colours, I suggest the <b>The Fabric </b><b>de-</b><b>Stash
Fabric-type Method.</b></span>
</h3>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b>Step One: From
your stash </b><u><b>choose a distinct fabric</b></u><b> type</b>:
floaty muslin, rich brocade, white linen, etc.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">For myself, recently
I’ve been given some green velvet fabric (old curtains).</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><b>Step Two: Start a
Pin Board using that fabric type as your theme.</b></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Rather than start a
“green outfits” Fashion plates pinboard, I’ve started “<a href="https://nz.pinterest.com/kuracarpenter/velvet-outfits/" target="_blank">Velvet outfits</a>” pinboard that includes extant dresses and other resources as well as Fashion Plates.
</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">And because I’ve
developed a recent interest in 1890s styles, I decided to limit my
search to this era.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Using velvet and
1890s as my search parameters I selected this Fashion Plate (below)
as my source for the outfit to make from the green velvet in my
stash.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhD9AxpyVo8GvWv_ZIdvtHhCHMEKUwIKkgOvZIpNpTEy4EC_7M77E5qXrg3xYjPg_DOstjr5pVKY7ct6GkLfUUNSXCa4MK8x5foJx3r6GLz30_jb3ldUhSBz-mxP0n74l1neBq1DqYNem20/s1600/purple+velvet+fashion+plate.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="364" data-original-width="240" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhD9AxpyVo8GvWv_ZIdvtHhCHMEKUwIKkgOvZIpNpTEy4EC_7M77E5qXrg3xYjPg_DOstjr5pVKY7ct6GkLfUUNSXCa4MK8x5foJx3r6GLz30_jb3ldUhSBz-mxP0n74l1neBq1DqYNem20/s400/purple+velvet+fashion+plate.jpg" width="261" /></a></div>
</div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<h3 style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The last method I
use, is what I call <b>The Spark of Interest</b> <b>Method</b>. </span></h3>
<h4 style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
</span></h4>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It’s
basically you see a Fashion Plate and are drawn to it by some
distinct element within.</span></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">For example, I was instantly
drawn to this Fashion Plate – one, because I mostly make Victorian
outfits, and two – the main reason truthfully, is the dog in the
plate is the same colour as one of my greyhounds, so bonus re-creating
points!</span><br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<ul>
<li><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">stay within your historical era comfort-zone. </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Also, unless you’re prepared to buy fabric specifically to match the outfit, concentrate on the silhouette, </span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">get the garments shapes right rather that worrying about the colours and fabric patterns.</span></li>

My cousin-in-law is a crafty minded person like myself, with a passion
for 70s retro fabrics. Unfortunately there's lack of op-shops where she
lives in Singapore. Therefore I've been gathering a rather lurid
selection of seventies sheets to pass to her when I next visit. [Like I
need a reason for op-shopping ;p ]<br />

<br />
They are part of global movement spurred by <a href="http://littlefreelibrary.org/" target="_blank">Little Free Libraries</a>.
Basically these are mini libraries (about the size of a large
dollhouse) in neighbourhoods, usually located on their 'Guardian’s'
fence, and passers-by are welcome to <i>'take a book now,
leave a book later.'</i><br />
<br />
In Dunedin <i>Lilliput Libraries</i> are the brain-child of Ruth Arnison, who's also coordinator for the popular <i>Poems in the Waiting Room</i>. <br />
<br />
Part
of the success of these libraries is a constant supply of good-quality
book donations. If you're in Dunedin, Otago, and would like to help
please bring books to the Dunedin Resene store at <span class="st"><i>172 Crawford Street.</i> </span><br />
<br />
You can also Donate money at their <a href="https://givealittle.co.nz/org/pitwr/pages" target="_blank">Lilliput Libraries Givealittle</a> page (I have! Be like me, I'm cool). Donations go towards the cost of constructing more Lilliput Libraries.<br />
<br />
You can follow the progress of Lilliput Libraries popping up in Dunedin neighbourhoods via the <a href="https://lilliputlibraries.wordpress.com/" target="_blank">Lilliput Libraries Blog</a> and also on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Lilliput-Libraries-565461176922493/?fref=ts&ref=br_tf" target="_blank">Facebook</a><br />
<br />
I'm certainly going to try and be involved myself, other than wanting one in my neighbourhood, I really <i>really</i> want to paint one!<br />

<br />
I used the offer to try out my new design <a href="http://www.spoonflower.com/fabric/4999045-antique-roses-vertical-rows-minty-on-pink-by-kura_carpenter">Antique Roses in Minty and Pink</a> and here's what my swatch looks like.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpKovQtCq-xYGYo8TeGQZjeq_ykc-qrI181AbTuOUsRNfQ31lvVQSL2kaV7GnbXGbmrP4HFXuchv9APS0Iax7e5_B-Ewkq2aztOFHUK9G926nn7Y0H5ydD1Ox_e_aq6Smn8iNL2lAil3AN/s1600/Antique-Roses---Minty-and-pink.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt=""Antique Roses - Minty on Pink" fabric design by Kura Carpenter, available via Spoonflower" border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpKovQtCq-xYGYo8TeGQZjeq_ykc-qrI181AbTuOUsRNfQ31lvVQSL2kaV7GnbXGbmrP4HFXuchv9APS0Iax7e5_B-Ewkq2aztOFHUK9G926nn7Y0H5ydD1Ox_e_aq6Smn8iNL2lAil3AN/s640/Antique-Roses---Minty-and-pink.jpg" title=""Antique Roses - Minty on Pink" fabric design by Kura Carpenter, available via Spoonflower" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The print-quality is fab, no surprises there, I've always been delighted with the Spoonflower print quality. The fabric is a stretchy and <i>thick</i> cotton, it feels durable, I'm very happy with it.<br />
<br />
I plan to make this swatch into a pin-cushion. I'll post a tutorial soon.<br />

<br />
The 1886 Victorian sewing book <i><b>Hecklinger's Ladies' Garments</b> - A Text Book How to Cut Up and Make Ladies' Garments</i> by Chas Hecklinger <b>is a gem of a book</b>.<br />
<br />
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
This is the first Victorian sewing book that <u>I have printed out the entire tex</u>t because it has so much useful
historical detail.</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
</div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
The section on draping
skirts is worthy alone, and while the actual selection of bodice<b> </b>patterns are few, there
are finished drawings to show styles, as well as pages and pages on possible trims. </div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div class="western" style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
From
pattern to construction to finishing, this text covers a lot more
than many of its contemporary publications. <span lang="EN-NZ"> <b><span style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">I rate this book 5

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZR7bwcDmWPyFh9o6AbSieuQ6KcZZInL8eNBU-_8Js38EiXw80lfWJ37E9fQT218B9Zft8R7gdSbBCjnE_6iQ8eKuVbFmANc-bxUo2fA6Q-rCFzr9_BBqM7YZ4uX-ZOS1PY5439lryg925/s1600/antique-roses---blog-promo--7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Fabric samples, designed by Kura Carenter, printed via Spoonflower" border="0" height="450" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZR7bwcDmWPyFh9o6AbSieuQ6KcZZInL8eNBU-_8Js38EiXw80lfWJ37E9fQT218B9Zft8R7gdSbBCjnE_6iQ8eKuVbFmANc-bxUo2fA6Q-rCFzr9_BBqM7YZ4uX-ZOS1PY5439lryg925/s640/antique-roses---blog-promo--7.jpg" title="Fabric samples, designed by Kura Carenter, printed via Spoonflower" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I also wanted to test how some rose illustrations from a 200 year old gardening book would reproduce as fabric. I'm thrilled with the result in both quality of the printing and the fabric.<br />

For a while now I've been thinking how fun it
would be to design some fabric. I've finally taken the plunge, and
wanted to share my very first fabric design.<br />
<br />
This design is currently part of a competition run by Spoonflower, so if you <b>feel like voting <a href="http://www.spoonflower.com/contest_voters_temp/new?contest_id=304" target="_blank">HERE</a></b><a href="http://www.spoonflower.com/contest_voters_temp/new?contest_id=304" target="_blank"> </a>that would be much appreciated :)<br />

<br />
You know where this is going, right?<br />
<br />
And being a slow sewer, a slow<i>er</i>, if you will, gosh darn it, I'm not finished. Today the challenge is due, so better something than nothing I felt.<br />
<br />
And actually this is a sewing milestone for me, not only my first corset, but the first time I've used a commercial pattern which I bought new (and not a vintage thrifty bargain or indie download) Simplicity 9769.<br />
<br />
This pattern is a dream! I may just become a commercial convert. (<i>Nooo!</i>) The pieces lined up perfectly, I've only had to do a few minor fitting changes which even my intermediate sewing skills could handle. The whole thing was nowhere near as scary as I imagined it would be.<br />
<br />
Full disclosure, this corset isn't intended as a historical replica. It's part of my investigation into corsets and back support. So the two main adjustments I've done is I've swap the busk with a zipper, and the grommets with fabric loops, both substitutions being to make it washing machine friendly.<br />
<br />
One final apology, I'm having a little trouble uploading my photos today, and I just don't have the energy to fix it, so the rest will have to come later... *sigh* <br />

Tip for today: Where to find Free PDF manuals for White sewing
machines and Overlockers/Sergers old and new...<b><br /></b></div>
<div class="western">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-X4ujuS61oi8MGqvpYrzfbS5IKReNFNS0OBtNIbHmXzT2eu6JtgHYpoEmI7DXn7FIhjjQyfjqVC9tjYhZNMMMFBsj1fesKoZZGISEThid1qiFluNluZjWjfA2idmaedJ9aNgppTv0vihL/s1600/free-White-manuals.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Where to find Free PDF manuals for White sewing machines and Overlockers/Sergers" border="0" height="554" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh-X4ujuS61oi8MGqvpYrzfbS5IKReNFNS0OBtNIbHmXzT2eu6JtgHYpoEmI7DXn7FIhjjQyfjqVC9tjYhZNMMMFBsj1fesKoZZGISEThid1qiFluNluZjWjfA2idmaedJ9aNgppTv0vihL/s1600/free-White-manuals.jpg" title="Where to find Free PDF manuals for White sewing machines and Overlockers/Sergers" width="640" /></a></b></div>
<br />
<br />
<b>Strange as it may seem, there are free White sewing machine and overlocker/serger
manuals via the Singer website</b>. <b>The manuals include many 20th century and even a few 19th century
models too</b>, (which was good news for me when <a href="http://makingmakesmylife.blogspot.co.nz/2013/09/buying-this-100-year-old-treadle-would.html" target="_blank">I bought a 1906 treadle</a>. pictured above)<br />
<br />
To find the manual you need, look under <a href="http://www.singerco.com/" target="_blank">Singer's</a> "<i>Support and Resources</i>"
then select "<i>Instruction manuals</i>" , or <a href="http://www.singerco.com/support/instruction-manuals" target="_blank"><b>follow this link</b></a>.<br />
<br />
<b>On
the <i>Instructions Manual</i> page you'll see it says "Find
Your Manua</b>l - Step 1, Step 2 etc etc" and under that there's a
search box that says "Model Number"<br />
<br />
<b>Into this
search box just type "w"</b><br />
(don't type <i>white</i>,
because that doesn't work)<br />
<br />
You'll be taken to a near
incomprehensible results page, <br />
<b>A) if you have a 20th century
model</b>, try doing a find via Ctrl-F and enter in your machine's
model number.<br />
<br />
<b>B) if you have a 19th century machine</b>,
unfortunately the method to finding the manual you need is a case of
clicking and opening the PDFs.<br />
<br />
<b>However may I suggest a couple
that may be of use: </b><br />
"<b>W7treadle</b>" <br />
- this
is a manual of a White treadle with a <i>boat</i> style bobbin
shuttle<br />
"<b>WRotary</b>"<br />
- this is a manual of a White
treadle with a <i>rotary</i> style bobbin shuttle<br />
<br />
Good
luck, and I hope you find what you need :)<br />
Kind regards<br />

<br />
Since today (nearly) co-insides with the <a href="http://thedreamstress.com/2014/10/the-hsf-14-challenge-22-gentlemen/" target="_blank">Historical Sew Fortnightly 2014 challenge #22</a>, I wanted to share a "Darcy" shirt I made. <br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizYoOS8E5OjIldKCMrR99dkceUYoxTBSsf0vV9INbjITvtU03ytxwPkzsdfS5Ld_M_0LnwrTK2u_kcDizmzKSUgTn0gyXqM8bwOQNuz25rWBcNWg7024t0YLKSBWfyUJFb7d-uIqsnHphn/s1600/Darcy-shirt-complete---front-on.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizYoOS8E5OjIldKCMrR99dkceUYoxTBSsf0vV9INbjITvtU03ytxwPkzsdfS5Ld_M_0LnwrTK2u_kcDizmzKSUgTn0gyXqM8bwOQNuz25rWBcNWg7024t0YLKSBWfyUJFb7d-uIqsnHphn/s1600/Darcy-shirt-complete---front-on.jpg" width="450" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">18th century men's "Darcy" shirt - Front view</td></tr>

<br />
I made the shirt using instructions from "A Typical Eighteenth Century Military Shirt: A practical construction guide by Judith Wicker". The guide is very easy to follow, and I believe historically accurate. <br />
<br />
[You can find a copy of this pattern by doing a Google search, I 'm not posting the link because I couldn't find the original source, but I think it came via the <a href="http://www.nwta.com/" target="_blank">NWTA</a>. ]<br />

<i><b>Pattern:</b></i> "A Typical Eighteenth Century Military Shirt: A practical construction guide by Judith Wicker". <br />
<i><b>Year:</b></i> Eighteenth Century<br />
<i><b>Notions:</b></i> buttons, thread<br />
<i><b>How historically accurate is it?</b></i> Very. 80-90% originals might have been made in linen, I made slight mistake on the neck opening (explained below) and I did use the sewing machine...<br />
<i><b>Hours to complete: </b></i>6-8 hours across two days<br />
<i><b>First worn:</b></i> Unworn<br />
<i><b>Total cost:</b></i> under $10<i><b></b></i><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Darcy shirt - side view</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
The only trouble I had with the pattern was the neck gussets, it
doesn't specify they need to be gathered - in the middle but not the
edges - as pictured below, to make the collar and neckline curve
properly.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">To ensure the neckline sits properly, gather centre of the shoulder gussets (green arrow), not the sides (red lines) </td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
Also, I had a self-made boo-boo. I totally forgot to flip the front neck slit facing around to the back, and only realised it was on the wrong side after I had sewn the shoulder gussets. So I just added a ruffle under the facing, to make it look deliberate...<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjatRjAzKl4rwRWrIPXWG6AschE37bu5o2MRNpvJcU24kDiHHBToY6ef0N09bVa6DN0Pl-fal0jjoWBwuiw5osWt25G90FuLNTtB137w4snNF_FvHHC13oOO5BWjjaoIgBDuvDX38OEOwhg/s1600/Darcy-shirt-adding-ruffle.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjatRjAzKl4rwRWrIPXWG6AschE37bu5o2MRNpvJcU24kDiHHBToY6ef0N09bVa6DN0Pl-fal0jjoWBwuiw5osWt25G90FuLNTtB137w4snNF_FvHHC13oOO5BWjjaoIgBDuvDX38OEOwhg/s1600/Darcy-shirt-adding-ruffle.jpg" width="450" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Pinning a ruffle under the facing which I forgot to flip through to the other side. Doh!</td></tr>

<br />
There are a lot of great old patterns out there that are free to download, via places like the Internet Archive, or possibly you've bought Janet Arnold's Patterns of Fashion series. Patterns which are scaleable, all drawn on helpful grids just waiting to be enlarged. The problem is even once you scale these patterns, chances are it's not going to fit.<br />
<br />
Well, I've come up with a method to solve this using Photoshop -- I used it to create <a href="http://makingmakesmylife.blogspot.co.nz/2014/04/sewing-milestone-creating-1880s-outfit.html" target="_blank">my 1880s jacket</a> -- and I'm sharing how I do it over in a series of tutorials on my graphic design blog, <a href="http://kuracarpenterdesign.blogspot.co.nz/2014/11/tutorial-scaling-historical-sewing.html" target="_blank">Part One</a> and <a href="http://kuracarpenterdesign.blogspot.co.nz/2014/12/tutorial-scaling-historical-sewing.html" target="_blank">Two</a> are live and I hope you'll check them out.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Feathers dyed by microwaving with food colouring</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
At the start of the year my sister-in-law showed me socks knitted from wool dyed with food colouring. They were BRIGHT. I was sceptical. Food colouring is water soluble. Right?<br />
<br />
Not so much when you microwave the heck out if it. I found an excellent tutorial on <a href="http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Dye-Yarn-with-Food-Coloring/" target="_blank">How To Dye Yarn with Food Colouring</a>, over at Instructables<br />
<br />
Knitting is not my thing, but when my chickens started moulting I wondered if the Food Colour Dyeing trick would work on feathers, why because then I could trim me some hats 'o plenty 19th century style for very little $$$<br />
<br />
Long story short, yes, you can dye feathers with food colouring.<br />
<br />
I followed the wool dyeing tutorial above with only two variations. Firstly I didn't really measure how much colouring I put it. Secondly after microwaving it the stated amount of time, I totally forgot about it and left it in the microwave over night. Did that extra time help the process? I can't say.<br />
The main difference when doing the chicken feathers was the water didn't turn clear like it's meant to with the wool method.<br />
<br />
But as you can see the colour took to the feathers quite well. Of course adding blue colouring to brown feathers has resulted in a greeny-blue, which I probably should have expected. I imagine if you use pure white chicken feathers the colours will be very true and BRIGHT.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Blue Food colouring dyed feathers on left, before dyeing natural brown on right</td></tr>

A word of warning, a little colour will come out of the feathers if you get them wet again, so I would be careful not to place them on white fabric. And I think I've found a potential new historical sewing obsession: 18th century frocks! <i>*swoon*</i><br />

If I had been in Bath in September a huge bonus would be seeing the gathering of Jane Austen fans in their Regency outfits. As it was only July, instead I went hawking. Even though there were no historical outfits involved it was THE BEST.<br />

The lovely Nessa from<a href="http://sewingempire.wordpress.com/" target="_blank"> SewingEmpire</a> asked me these questions via the ‘Liebster Award’ months
ago, but I have been <strike>too damn useless</strike> soo busy...<br />
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br />
<b>- What is your favorite
historical period?
</b></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
For sewing, Victorian, specifically
the bustle era periods, but really anything between about late 1860s
– to early 1890s.</div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<b>- How long have you been sewing, and how
did you get into it?
</b></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Just under 2 years. I have a background
in jewellery and I came interested in making Steampunk accessories -
goggles and rayguns - but forgot those entirely once I saw the
bustles and hats people were wearing.
</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
My UFO (Un-Finished Object) for the <a href="http://thedreamstress.com/the-historical-sew-fortnightly-2014/" target="_blank">Historical Sew Fortnightly 2014</a> - <a href="http://thedreamstress.com/2014/01/the-hsf-14-challenge-8-ufos-phds/" target="_blank">Challenge #8: UFOs & PHDs</a> is the <a href="http://www.trulyvictorian.net/tvxcart/product.php?productid=35" target="_blank">Truly Victorian 1873 Polonaise</a> which I started on well over a year ago.<br />
<br />
The pattern came together like a dream, even back then with my rusty haven't-sewn-since-highschool skills, until it came to the buttonholes and sewing on the sleeves...<br />
<br />
Sure, being well-versed in YouTube tutorials, a stack of library books, in theory I knew how to attach sleeves and make buttonholes, but somehow I was filled with a dread akin to that of a last-minute supermarket run, the day before a public holiday, and so, being scared (and a bit spoiled), I stamped my feet and said, <i>No-won't, too hard!</i><br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzmVHQ9pey2RNnnwuzjreH8SoxYexH017k_gLYSpOZUfpLzOdHNpFsr-wn_RE2c8hF220KP4_s4lKndiCpeqRoMe4bwOaEbsm5lxuGWCQnSgCR8oVjuZk2ezn-ZJCrhef3mE05dy7WAMRg/s1600/TV-polonaise--sleeve.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="451" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzmVHQ9pey2RNnnwuzjreH8SoxYexH017k_gLYSpOZUfpLzOdHNpFsr-wn_RE2c8hF220KP4_s4lKndiCpeqRoMe4bwOaEbsm5lxuGWCQnSgCR8oVjuZk2ezn-ZJCrhef3mE05dy7WAMRg/s1600/TV-polonaise--sleeve.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Sleeve ready to attach...but how?</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
And thus, I wimped out and this lovely top was hidden in the back wardrobe.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiT5ZUx8_3P21EJy-selpuhyF3Sq9FIaXsJJ43U2fvRAWsZkIZ7YnnqEGxcQ14RHKANa46lUbWxYRvs4m5p7c2TvSaV_-GzDbEBWTiDmVws6f_cGqcrfx2oB8CkX1Ii-v4KDXTMujoeHsJG/s1600/TV-polonaise---bodice-unfinished.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiT5ZUx8_3P21EJy-selpuhyF3Sq9FIaXsJJ43U2fvRAWsZkIZ7YnnqEGxcQ14RHKANa46lUbWxYRvs4m5p7c2TvSaV_-GzDbEBWTiDmVws6f_cGqcrfx2oB8CkX1Ii-v4KDXTMujoeHsJG/s1600/TV-polonaise---bodice-unfinished.jpg" width="451" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">UFO - no sleeves, no buttons. Maybe it could just a be a Pirate vest???</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
I know I am not alone in my sleeve-attachment-phobia. What is it about sewing on sleeves that <i>seems</i> (cos it ain't really) so hard? <i>Trying to force all that material until the sewing machine arm--not being able to see properly--fabric gets bunched up--argh--now I've sewed a pinch in the fabric--have to do it again!!!</i><br />
<br />
But gentle Readers, there is hope! The answer lies in going back to basics, ie, hand-sewing.<br />
<br />
I learned this when sewing my <a href="http://makingmakesmylife.blogspot.co.nz/2014/04/sewing-milestone-creating-1880s-outfit.html" target="_blank">1888 outfit</a>. Simply prep a doubled-thread onto a needle, wax the thread - waxing is super important, <u>it stops the thread from tangling</u> when you sew.<br />
<br />
<b>[>>>How do you wax thread?</b> Take your all-ready-to-go doubled-thread and a beeswax candle, press your thumb on the knot, thus holding the thread against the wax, and with your freehand pull the thread tails upward, so the threads slide between the wax and thumb. Do this twice. Yes, it's that simple.]<br />
<br />
Then with sleeve pinned in position to the bodice, back stitch the two parts together. A curved needle helps, but is not essential. Not only does this create a surprisingly strong seam, but I have found hand-sewing quite relaxing. <br />
<br />
And so, now my UFO is finished!<br />

<i><b>The Challenge: </b></i>Challenge #8: UFOs & PHDs<br />
<b><i>Fabric: </i></b>some kind of jacquard, with some kind of brushed broadcloth, maybe. Full disclosure: this started out as a tablecloth and a pair of curtains.<b><i><br /></i></b><br />
<b><i>Pattern:</i></b><i> </i>Truly Victorian 1873 Polonaise<br />
<b><i>Year: </i></b>1873<br />
<i><b>Notions: </b></i><b></b>thread, quite a bit of iron-in interfacing<i><b><br /></b></i><br />
<i><b>How historically accurate is it? </b></i><b></b>Excluding fabric, 85%, the pattern is very historically accurate (less so with my alterations) but the construction is a 50-50 blend<b><i> </i></b>of what you should do, and making-do<i><b><br /></b></i><br />
<i><b>Hours to complete: </b></i><b></b>Lost count, started in early 2013...<i><b><br /></b></i><br />
<b><i>First worn: </i></b>Not worn yet<b><i><br /></i></b><br />
<i><b>Total cost:</b></i><b></b> $15 - $20<i><b><br /></b></i><br />
<br />
One last note: Being that I am a tinkerer and a meddler, and can <i>never </i>simply follow a pattern, here's what the Truly Victorian 1873 Polonaise should look like.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOL1HFAQYJqdkfYfqbU1XMVydv8N0BQIrXeNzXezcm8wOofjYCWbMUaGkXaGxi4jhyG7cLj8IFaU_ThK2zY9PMceG2dDOV3R-dHOYh8q6Da9fhYYqrEjmBDSOcpKe6pOBI_BxeOD4Nu5c5/s1600/TV-polonaise---1873---original-pattern.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="449" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOL1HFAQYJqdkfYfqbU1XMVydv8N0BQIrXeNzXezcm8wOofjYCWbMUaGkXaGxi4jhyG7cLj8IFaU_ThK2zY9PMceG2dDOV3R-dHOYh8q6Da9fhYYqrEjmBDSOcpKe6pOBI_BxeOD4Nu5c5/s1600/TV-polonaise---1873---original-pattern.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Whereas I have shortened the bodice length and altered the curved hemline to a double-point, which you can (kind of) see in this construction picture.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<b>Wait! What about the buttonholes? </b><br />

Confession time. I still haven't learned that skill, but I have learned of a wonderful invention called Hook and Eye Tape...<br />

I was recently given a very generous gift: the button collection that belonged to a friend's mother.<br />
<br />
I am sure anyone with a crafty bent, or who is like myself, quite possibly part magpie, can imagine the afternoon I spent spreading them all out, stacking, sorting and admiring. The experience positively brought out the Gollum in me. <i>My precious!</i><br />
<br />
Among the notables (pictured below) were Bakelite, glass and metal filigree (possibly Edwardian??), which was my fav. <i>*sigh* So sparkly... </i><br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUzHaGlaBnl-hYXcu3yEKyElzYXUtYulTWhDai1EBPAp9nO6Aun4EDW6lIdmKw_JApmda25vVKwgJsiGc20WfJ5Zugz5M3L7hLvh9VgP8LnXJK18syfnjfHee4bqiys5_DTiGLKVnmesca/s1600/vinatge-buttons.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUzHaGlaBnl-hYXcu3yEKyElzYXUtYulTWhDai1EBPAp9nO6Aun4EDW6lIdmKw_JApmda25vVKwgJsiGc20WfJ5Zugz5M3L7hLvh9VgP8LnXJK18syfnjfHee4bqiys5_DTiGLKVnmesca/s1600/vinatge-buttons.jpg" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">My Vintage button collection - One thing is fer sure, they don't make 'em like they used to! </td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Because I make historical costumes I am sure I'll be able to make good use of these tiny treasures.<br />
But true to the nature of button collections there were a lot of singles. It got me wondering, what else can you make with buttons? <br />
<br />
Here are a few cool things I found via the interwebs.<br />

<br />
They were simple projects for a more simple time, chosen to help build up my sewing skills so one day in the distance future I might sew something from my fav decade, the 1880s.<br />
<br />
Two months ago I knew I needed a complete outfit for an Images of Past Dunedin event by the end of March and like an American Idol contestant I wasn't going to let dubious skills stop me any longer so I took the 1880s plunge.<br />
<br />
Here's what I came up with:<br />

I drafted the jacket using Adobe Illustrator, plotting out the Nat. Garment pattern
exactly as stated and then merging it with my measurements in the form
of a sloper - drafted for me by a very kind friend, and without which I
could not have made the jacket at all. Thank you S.W!!!<br />

<b><i>Year: </i></b>1888<br />
<i><b>Notions: </b></i>thread, hook and eyes<i><b></b></i><br />
<i><b><br /></b></i>
<i><b>How historically accurate is it? </b></i><br />
I give this 8 out of 10 for historicalness.<i><b><i><b></b></i> </b></i>Excluding the fabric's synthetic content<i>, </i>the pattern is 100% authentic, the construction is flat-lined, and sewn entirely on my 1937 Singer No15 which only does straight stitch - no reverse!<br />

I also hoped, as I had to create a jacket anyway, to enter it in the <a href="http://thedreamstress.com/2013/12/hsf-14-challenge-5-bodice/" target="_blank">HSF 'Bodice' challenge #5</a>- but that was due about 10 days ago :( Curse deadlines! <br />
<br />
Anyhoo, aside from that, being as I am on the hunt for things which will aid me in <a href="http://makingmakesmylife.blogspot.co.nz/2014/03/challenge-accepted-create-1850s60s.html" target="_blank"><b>myself imposed challenge</b></a> of creating a suitable pattern for an 1850s - 1860s style headdress, I was very pleased to find <b>two</b> <b>authentic 1862 patterns in an old book titled:<i> "A history of costume</i>" by Carl Kolher</b>, that I had borrowed from the Dunedin public library.<br />
<br />
And good news, a edition is available online and free to download as PDF through the Internet archive <a href="https://archive.org/details/historyofcostume00khle" target="_blank">HERE</a><br />
<br />
If you can't redraw these patterns yourself, rest assured in a week or so
I plan to recreate them in Adobe Illustrator and
so will post them here for everyone to share :) <br />

<br />
No one did, but after looking at the cover pictures, I began to wonder just how hard it would be to try and make up a pattern for such Victorian headdresses myself. Famous last words? Maybe.<br />
<br />
Being geeky I've started a pinterest board <a href="http://www.pinterest.com/kuracarpenter/victorian-head-dress/" target="_blank">HERE</a> to help inspire me and keep track of my research, .<br />
and I hope it may be useful for others too.<br />
